THE NEIGHBORHOOD DEFENDER SERVICE OF HARLEM Social Work Intern, Criminal Defense – Summer Internship   THE NEIGHBORHOOD DEFENDER SERVICE OF HARLEM (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office located in Harlem, providing criminal, civil, and family representation The Criminal Defense Practice at NDS represents residents of Northern Manhattan who are charged with crimes and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Clients are represented by teams composed of lawyers, investigators, social workers, client advocates, team administrators and interns. NDS also provides pre-arrest representation to clients under threat of arrest. NDS adheres to a client-centered approach to representation that emphasizes a heightened responsiveness to clients’ needs prior to arrest, while a case is pending, and after the case concludes. NDS is committed to addressing the comprehensive legal and social service needs of clients.   The Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, Criminal Defense Practice is looking for students who are interested in the Social Work field, or who are currently enrolled in a BSW or MSW program who are looking for more experience during this summer. This uncredited internship will give you the opportunity to work within a Public Defender’s Office under the direction of multiple qualified Social Workers. You will learn how social work is integrated into the criminal legal system, as well as gain skills and knowledge of the social work field.

The Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office providing free legal representation to residents of Northern Manhattan in criminal, civil, and family proceedings.   NDS seeks a rising 2L or 3L law student to join the Immigration Defense Team in Fall 2024 as a part-time legal intern on a volunteer basis. As part of NDS’ commitment to holistic representation, the Immigration Defense Team defends Northern Manhattan residents facing removal due to contact with the criminal legal system. In addition to representing clients in removal proceedings, the Immigration Defense Team advises attorneys in our Criminal Defense Practice on the immigration consequences of a criminal conviction. The practice also represents clients in a number of affirmative applications such naturalization, adjustment of status, work permit applications, and more, primarily for clients with criminal history. The legal intern will be involved in client intake, legal research on questions of criminal/immigration law and direct client representation in removal proceedings and affirmative applications.

Neighborhood Defender Service of Texas (NDS) has a legal services office providing free, community-based, client-centered, holistic housing defense representation to low-income residents of Harris County.  NDS clients are represented by multidisciplinary teams including attorneys, advocates, and team administrators. NDS adheres to a client-centered approach to representation that emphasizes a heightened responsiveness to clients’ needs.   The Harris County Eviction Defense Team plays an integral role in NDS’s fulfillment of its holistic mission and in realizing the right to counsel in housing proceedings. The practice is part of the monumental movement toward a civil Gideon, providing assigned counsel representation to low- and no-income tenants facing a wide range of eviction proceedings in order to safeguard the right to secure, stable housing and combat the destabilization and disintegration of Harris County’s diverse communities. The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing client-centered representation to the clients of the Housing Defense Practice.

NDS is seeking candidates to staff a total of 5 Supervising Attorneys roles in our Family Defense Practice in Manhattan and the Bronx.   OVERVIEW: The Family Defense Practice at NDS represents parents in family policing cases (sometimes called “child welfare” cases) filed by the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) as well as related family court cases, including custody, visitation and termination of parental rights proceedings. Through our holistic approach to representation, the Family Defense Practice provides parents with the help they need—both inside and outside of court—to keep their families safe and stable. Parents are represented not only by a high-quality attorney, but also social workers, team administrators, and parent advocates. NDS is committed to advancing due process rights for parents by fighting unwarranted state intervention in their lives and advocating for related systemic change.
